Reporting:Venezuelan Gangs Detaining Journalists After Alleged Anti-Maduro Activity.

Reports circulating this week claim that armed gangs in Venezuela have begun detaining journalists and civilians accused of supporting efforts to capture President Nicolás Maduro, raising alarm among press freedom advocates and human rights organizations.

According to the reports, criminal groups—often referred to locally as colectivos or gang-aligned militias—are allegedly acting as de facto enforcers in certain, targeting reporters, activists, and private citizens suspected of expressing support for actions against the Maduro government.

Those detained are said to be questioned, threatened, or held without any legal process, further blurring the line between criminal activity and political repression.

Journalists are reportedly being singled out for their coverage of opposition movements, security operations, or unrest tied to rumors or claims surrounding attempts to detain or remove Maduro from power.

In some cases, individuals have allegedly been targeted based on social media posts, private messages, or perceived political sympathies rather than any direct involvement.

Human rights advocates warn that the involvement of gangs in political intimidation represents a dangerous escalation.

Venezuela has long been criticized for restricting press freedom through arrests, censorship, and legal pressure, but the alleged use of criminal groups to silence dissent adds a new layer of fear and unpredictability.

“These reports suggest a climate where there is no distinction between state authority and criminal enforcement,” one regional analyst noted.

“When gangs are empowered—formally or informally—to police political loyalty, journalists and civilians are placed at extreme risk.”

The Maduro government has not publicly confirmed the reports, and official channels have not acknowledged any coordination with gangs.

However, Venezuela has a documented history of armed civilian groups operating with tacit approval in certain areas, particularly during periods of political tension.

International press organizations are calling for independent verification of the claims and demanding the immediate release of any journalists detained for their work.

They also urge foreign governments and multilateral institutions to closely monitor the situation and press for protections for media workers and civilians.

As information continues to emerge, the reports underscore the increasingly precarious environment for free expression in Venezuela, where political instability, criminal violence, and state power appear to be converging—leaving journalists and ordinary citizens caught in the middle.
