Former President Donald Trump on Saturday accused Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey of “inciting insurrection” following a fatal shooting during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis—an incident that sparked protests and renewed political tensions across the state.

According to the Department of Homeland Security and Minneapolis police, federal immigration officers shot and killed a man during an enforcement action, prompting demonstrations and a heightened law enforcement presence in the area.

Authorities have said investigations into the shooting are ongoing.

In response, Trump placed responsibility for the unrest on state and city leadership, arguing that their rhetoric and policies toward immigration enforcement have contributed to a volatile atmosphere.

He claimed that repeated public criticism of federal immigration authorities by Democratic officials has encouraged hostility toward law enforcement and undermined public order.

Trump also revived broad and previously disputed allegations of election fraud in Minnesota, asserting that systemic issues in the state’s governance extend beyond immigration and public safety.

While he did not provide new evidence to support those claims, he framed them as part of what he described as a wider breakdown of accountability among Democratic leaders.

Governor Walz and Mayor Frey have not accepted Trump’s characterization.

Both officials have previously defended the right to protest while emphasizing the need for peaceful demonstrations and cooperation with law enforcement during investigations.

The incident has intensified an already polarized national debate over immigration enforcement, the role of federal officers in local communities, and the responsibilities of elected officials during moments of unrest.

Supporters of Trump argue that strong enforcement and unambiguous backing of law enforcement are essential to preventing violence, while critics warn against rhetoric that could inflame tensions or prejudge ongoing investigations.

As federal and local authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting, Minneapolis remains a focal point in the broader political struggle over immigration policy, public safety, and leadership accountability in times of crisis.
