The United States has formally withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), bringing to an end its membership in the world’s leading global health institution one year after President Donald Trump announced plans to leave the organization.

The exit marks a historic shift in U.S. engagement with international health governance.

The WHO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, plays a central role in coordinating global responses to disease outbreaks, setting health standards, and supporting health systems in developing countries.

The United States had long been one of the organization’s largest financial contributors and most influential members.

President Trump originally announced the decision to withdraw amid criticism of the WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

His administration accused the organization of mismanaging the early stages of the outbreak and being overly influenced by China.

Despite pushback from public health experts, lawmakers, and U.S. allies, the withdrawal process continued, culminating in the official exit this week.

Supporters of the move argue that it allows the United States to redirect resources toward domestic health priorities and pursue bilateral health partnerships without what they describe as bureaucratic constraints.

They also claim the decision sends a message about accountability in international institutions.

Critics, however, warn that leaving the WHO could weaken global cooperation at a time when infectious diseases, climate-related health threats, and future pandemics require coordinated international action.

Public health advocates have expressed concern that the withdrawal may reduce the United States’ influence in shaping global health policies and limit access to critical data and early-warning systems.

The WHO has acknowledged the U.S. departure, noting that it will continue its mission with remaining member states while urging continued international collaboration to address shared health challenges.

As the world faces evolving public health risks, the long-term implications of the United States’ exit—from global disease surveillance to diplomatic relations—are expected to remain a subject of intense debate both at home and abroad.
