Breaking News:Democrats Escalate Calls to Defund ICE, Impeach DHS Secretary After Fatal Minnesota Incident.

Democratic lawmakers intensified calls on Wednesday to defund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following a deadly incident during a riot in Minnesota that left a woman fatally shot by law enforcement.

The incident occurred amid unrest in which federal agents were deployed, according to officials.

Authorities allege the woman was shot after attempting to run over an ICE agent with her vehicle.

Federal law enforcement officials have described the shooting as a defensive response to an imminent threat, while investigations into the circumstances remain ongoing.

Despite those claims, several Democratic lawmakers condemned both ICE’s presence and the broader enforcement tactics used during the unrest.

In forceful statements, they described the episode as a “disgrace to our democracy,” arguing that federal immigration enforcement agencies have become overly militarized and insufficiently accountable to the public.

Progressive members of Congress renewed long-standing demands to strip ICE of funding, asserting that its operations escalate violence and undermine civil liberties, particularly during protests and riots.

Some lawmakers went further, calling for impeachment proceedings against DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, accusing her of failing to properly oversee federal agents and protect civilian lives.

“This is what happens when unaccountable federal forces are deployed into volatile situations,” one Democratic lawmaker said, arguing that DHS leadership bears responsibility for the outcome.

Others framed the incident as part of a broader pattern of excessive force and aggressive enforcement under current immigration policies.

Republicans and DHS officials pushed back strongly against the criticism, defending the ICE agent’s actions and warning against what they called the politicization of a dangerous and complex situation.

DHS officials emphasized that agents have the right to defend themselves when facing lethal threats and cautioned that defunding ICE would weaken border security and immigration enforcement nationwide.

Legal experts note that impeachment of a cabinet secretary is rare and would face steep political and procedural hurdles, particularly without clear findings of misconduct.

Similarly, efforts to defund ICE would require congressional approval and are unlikely to advance without significant shifts in the balance of power.

As investigations continue, the fatal shooting has intensified an already heated national debate over immigration enforcement, federal policing, and accountability.

The Minnesota incident is likely to remain a flashpoint as lawmakers on both sides use it to advance sharply contrasting visions of public safety, civil rights, and the role of federal authority.
