BREAKING NEWS:Hope Walz Says There’s “Enough Truth” to Minnesota Fraud Scandal as Her Father Withdraws from Governor’s Race.

St. Paul, Minn. — In a rare public statement, Hope Walz, daughter of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, acknowledged that there is “enough truth” to the massive fraud scandal that has consumed state politics — even as she defended her father’s decision to exit the 2026 gubernatorial race.

The 25-year-old made the comments in a podcast interview on “One Hour Detours” hours after Gov. Walz announced he would not seek a third term amid escalating scrutiny over alleged welfare fraud involving social-service programs.

“I think there was enough truth to the fraud claim,” Hope Walz told host John O’Sullivan, referring to accusations that state funds meant for humanitarian efforts were abused in large-scale schemes.

Estimates of the alleged fraud have ranged widely, with prosecutors indicating the total could be at least $1 billion and potentially much higher.

Family Under Fire — and a Political Swan Song

Hope argued that the controversy was politicized and amplified, particularly by former President Donald Trump and Republican critics, who seized on the scandal as a focal point of their attacks.

She suggested that the intense scrutiny — including on social media — contributed to her father’s choice to step aside.

“I think he was popular during the campaign last fall, and he’s still in office, and he’s running again — and so it’s just kind of an easy thing for them to pick up on,” she said.

Hope also spoke emotionally about the personal toll on her family, including online harassment directed at her and her younger brother, Gus, following incendiary political commentary — notably a Thanksgiving message from Trump that critics labeled offensive and divisive.

Why Walz Ended His Campaign

Governor Walz’s decision to withdraw from the governor’s race was announced on January 5, 2026, with the Democrat citing the need to focus on governing during a period of extraordinary political tension and continued fraud investigations.

He framed his departure as a choice to prioritize Minnesota’s needs over political ambition.

Walz, a former Democratic vice-presidential nominee in 2024, emphasized that he would dedicate his energy to combating fraud and serving Minnesotans rather than engaging in a contentious campaign.

His announcement has upended the state’s political landscape and opened the door for potential successors.

Scandal and Scrutiny

The controversy stems from multiple fraud probes into Minnesota’s social-services systems, including high-profile cases of welfare and pandemic relief fraud involving nonprofits and other organizations.

Federal prosecutors and investigators have charged dozens of individuals in connection with these schemes, spotlighting alleged misuse of public funds intended for childcare, food programs, and other services.

Republican lawmakers have pressed for further accountability and consequences, while Democrats contend that fraud existed but has been blown out of proportion for political effect.

Hope Walz echoed this argument, asserting that her father’s national profile made him an easy target.

Political Fallout and Next Steps

Walz’s withdrawal has intensified debate within Minnesota’s political circles.

Republican critics have accused him of avoiding accountability, while Democratic leaders have applauded his continued focus on addressing state issues.

With the governor’s race now wide open, figures such as U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar are reported to be considering entering the contest to keep the Democratic Party competitive.

As investigators continue to work through the complex fraud cases and political reactions reverberate, Minnesota remains at the center of a controversy with implications for state governance, party politics, and public trust in government programs.
