BREAKING NEWS:Trump Sends Border “Czar” Tom Homan to Minnesota Amid Deadly Federal Shootings and Rising Tensions.
President Donald J. Trump announced on Monday that he is dispatching his border enforcement czar, Tom Homan, to Minnesota as federal immigration enforcement operations there have sparked national outrage and local unrest.
In a social media post, Trump said:
“I am sending Tom Homan to Minnesota tonight.
He has not been involved in that area, but knows and likes many of the people there.
Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me…”
The decision comes amid heightened tensions in Minneapolis after a second fatal shooting involving federal immigration agents in less than three weeks.
On Saturday, a 37-year-old man, Alex Pretti, was shot and killed by U.S.
Border Patrol agents during a confrontation that turned violent — a moment captured on bystander video that appears to contradict early official narratives about the encounter.
Earlier in January, another Minnesota resident, Renee Good, was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, drawing sharp criticism from local leaders and civil rights advocates.
Trump described Homan as someone who is “tough but fair” and will directly oversee the federal ICE operations in the state, reporting back to the president.
Though Homan has not previously been involved in Minnesota enforcement activities, the White House suggests his experience and relationships in federal law-enforcement circles make him suited to manage the escalating situation.
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions.
Minnesota officials have demanded a reduction in federal enforcement operations and criticized the use of ICE agents amid what they view as inappropriate federal intervention in local matters.
Demonstrations and confrontations between protestors and federal agents have continued, fueled in part by circulating footage that challenges statements from Homeland Security officials.
In Congress, some lawmakers from both parties have called for deeper investigations into the conduct of federal immigration agents and the broader strategy behind “Operation Metro Surge,” which has deployed thousands of ICE personnel to the state.
Democratic senators announced they will oppose key homeland-security funding unless accountability measures and independent reviews are put into place.
The deployment of Homan also unfolds against a backdrop of political tension: Trump has framed the unrest in part as a reaction to alleged fraud and lawlessness in Minnesota, while opponents accuse the administration of escalating a crisis through aggressive enforcement tactics that have not been fully transparent.
As Homan prepares to take charge of ICE’s Minnesota operations, authorities and advocates alike are pushing for clarity, oversight, and an end to the violence that has claimed the lives of local residents and ignited national debate over federal enforcement powers.
