Breaking:Chamber Chaos as Omar Confronts Trump During State of the Union. Read more
Tensions flared inside the House chamber Tuesday night when Rep.
Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) interrupted President Donald Trump during his State of the Union address, shouting accusations that he was a “liar” and a “murderer.”
The outburst came as the president discussed his administration’s immigration and foreign policy record.
Witnesses in the chamber said Omar’s remarks drew immediate reactions from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, with some Republicans calling for decorum and several Democrats appearing visibly tense as the moment unfolded.
Seated next to Omar was Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who wore a pin featuring a profane message directed at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The accessory, clearly visible during the televised address, underscored ongoing divisions in Congress over immigration enforcement policies.
House rules traditionally call for members to maintain decorum during presidential addresses, though interruptions and vocal protests have occurred at past State of the Union speeches by members of both parties.
While some Democratic allies defended Omar’s protest as an expression of frustration over administration policies, Republican lawmakers criticized the disruption as disrespectful to the office of the presidency and the formal setting.
Neither Omar nor Tlaib immediately issued a detailed statement following the address, though both have been outspoken critics of the former president’s immigration practices and foreign policy decisions.
The incident highlights the deeply polarized political climate in Washington, where high-profile moments such as the State of the Union increasingly serve as flashpoints for partisan confrontation.
