U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark declaration on Tuesday, saying it is “too late” for diplomatic talks with Iran even as Tehran reportedly signalled a willingness to reopen negotiations following extensive military strikes.
Trump made this assertion in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, asserting that Iran’s air defenses, Air Force, Navy, and leadership have been effectively neutralized by ongoing U.S.–Israeli military operations.
In his post, Trump wrote:
“Their air defense, Air Force, Navy, and Leadership is gone. They want to talk.
I said ‘Too Late!’” — a message that underscores Washington’s hardened stance amid one of the most intense periods of hostilities in recent Middle East history.
The president’s comments come as joint U.S. and Israeli strikes have reportedly struck Iranian military infrastructure and leadership targets, severely degrading Tehran’s defensive capabilities.
While Iranian representatives have publicly suggested a willingness to engage in negotiations “with dignity,” Trump signalled that the opportunity for diplomacy had passed, citing the extent of military damage inflicted.
The shift in tone contrasts with earlier discussions in Washington about potential diplomatic engagement, reflecting broader frustration with Tehran’s actions and the rapidly evolving military landscape.
Trump’s statement also aligns with remarks from senior U.S. officials emphasizing continued pressure on Iran’s capabilities and signaling readiness to extend operations if necessary.
The international response to the escalating conflict has been mixed.
Some allies have called for de-escalation and a return to negotiation, while others have expressed support for forceful measures aimed at deterring what they view as destabilizing behavior by Iran.
Meanwhile, regional tensions remain high, with ongoing retaliatory strikes reported across the Gulf and responses from various state and non-state actors across the Middle East.
As the situation continues to evolve, Trump’s dismissal of diplomatic overtures highlights the deepening divide between military action and negotiation, raising critical questions about the future trajectory of the conflict and the prospects for lasting peace.
