Coco Gauff has made an impressive start to her tennis career and the teenager thinks she can surpass the greatness of icons Serena Williams and Margaret Court
At the age of just 19 Coco Gauff is already breaking records set by Serena Williams as she pursues her first Australian Open title. The American is into her first semi-final at Melbourne Park after coming through a tricky quarterfinal encounter with Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in three tight sets.
To make the last eight she defeated Poland’s Magdalena Fręch 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour in what was a ruthless display of tennis. This saw the fourth seed surpass Williams’ record by registering the most appearances in the Australian Open last 16 by an American teenager.
In the process, she reached her sixth Grand Slam quarterfinal as a teenager, the same number achieved by Williams, and three-time US Open champion Kim Clijsters. Only Maria Sharapova with 10 has more. The American has continued her great run of form and has won 34 of her last 38 matches after suffering a first-round exit at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships
Seven of these contests came at the US Open when she claimed the first Grand Slam of her career in September. Gauff was the first American teenager to win at Flushing Meadows since Williams triumphed in 1999 when she was just 17.
