Crowds Celebrate Mojtaba Khamenei’s Appointment as Iran’s Supreme Leader Amid Fears of Hardline Rule

A large crowd gathered on Monday at Tehran’s Enghelab Square to celebrate the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, in recent United States–Israeli strikes.

The gathering came a day after Iran’s powerful clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, formally announced Mojtaba as the successor to the late leader.

Supporters waved Iranian flags and carried portraits of the new leader as they hailed the transition as a moment of national unity during a time of regional conflict.

Many in the crowd described Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment as a continuation of the political and ideological path established by his father, who ruled the Islamic Republic for more than three decades.

The 56-year-old cleric had long been considered a possible successor despite never holding an elected government position.

Over the years, he built strong connections within Iran’s political establishment and the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, positioning himself as a significant figure behind the scenes of Iranian politics.

His appointment comes at a particularly tense moment for Iran, which is grappling with the aftermath of the killing of Ali Khamenei and an ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel.

Analysts say the decision to select Mojtaba signals continuity within Iran’s ruling establishment and suggests the country may maintain its hardline stance toward Western powers.

However, the move has also raised concerns among critics both inside and outside Iran. Some fear that Mojtaba Khamenei could rule with a similarly strict grip on power as his father, whose tenure was marked by tight control over political dissent and strong opposition to Western influence.

Others warn that the transition could fuel debate about dynastic succession in a republic that was founded on opposition to hereditary rule following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

As celebrations continue in parts of Tehran, observers say the new leader faces the daunting challenge of guiding Iran through one of the most volatile periods in its modern history, balancing internal political pressures with escalating regional tensions.
