Everyone considers Patrick Mahomes almost invincible; he has the fifth-best rating (93.8) and the fourth-best yards-per-pass average (7) among quarterbacks with more than 350 passes thrown this season. However, even he has a blind spot, and Jalen Carter discovered it.

During the first half of the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11 of the NFL, Mahomes rushed his offense to get within field goal range with nine seconds on the clock.

That is when it happened: while Mahomes spiked the ball to stop the clock, defensive tackle Jalen Carter threw himself at the quarterback’s feet and almost intercepted the ball… almost.

The pigskin bounced off the defender’s hands and was out of his reach, much to the relief of Mahomes, the Chiefs, and the Arrowhead Stadium stands.

I saw it on the internet: Carter
In an interview after the game, which Philadelphia won 24-17, Carter admitted that he had gotten the idea from the least expected place: a YouTube video.

“I saw it on the internet; I’ve seen it on YouTube. Some high school kid tried, and he actually caught the ball. I thought, ‘That’s a good idea,'” Carter explained.

When the play presented itself, the defender knew that the circumstances were perfect to attempt the feat. “I knew they would spike it, so I tried to go for it,” Carter told WIP’s Eliot Shorr-Parks.

A high school play that almost defeat Mahomes
Although it is the first time that someone has tried it at a professional level, more than one high school boy has attempted it in official games, with varied results.

Just as Carter said, in his video, the player did achieve it, but others have not been so lucky. Now it only remains to be seen if this will become a trend that NFL quarterbacks will have to watch out for.
