All titles Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have lost since quitting royal life
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have lost a number of titles and patronages since they quit Royal life in 2020 – here’s a look at everything they gave back.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned some royal titles when they quit for the USA.
Prince Harry suffered a personal blow this week as his elder brother, Prince William, was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps by their father, King Charles.
This move is seen as a significant slight to Harry, considering that he served with the 662 Squadron, part of the corps, in an Apache helicopter in Afghanistan in 2012.
Reports suggest that this honour would likely have been bestowed upon the Duke had he not decided to step back from his duties as a working member of the Royal Family in 2020, reports the Mirror.
However, this is far from the only loss Harry has experienced since his departure from royal life. We examine all the patronages and titles that he and his wife Meghan were required to relinquish.
Harry, who served on the frontline in Afghanistan, was forced to surrender several military titles upon his exit from royal life. He no longer holds the positions of Captain General of the Royal Marines, Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington in Suffolk, or Honorary Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Naval Commands’ Small Ships and Diving.
Furthermore, he is prohibited from wearing his ceremonial royal uniforms, including at his late grandmother’s funeral in September 2022. This restriction has greatly upset Harry, especially given that his uncle, Prince Andrew, is still permitted to do so.
Andrew stepped down from public duties in May 2020, and his honorary military affiliations and Royal charitable patronages were stripped by the Queen in January 2022. Despite this, he still holds the rank of Vice-Admiral and is thus permitted to wear the uniform.
Harry, having chosen to step away from his role as a working royal, was required to relinquish his military appointments, and consequently no longer holds any military rank.
Interestingly, he donned a morning suit for his father’s Coronation; royal protocol prohibits non-working members of the Royal family from wearing military uniforms at official state events.
Britain’s Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex waves as he leaves after attending a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.
However, the King granted his son special permission to wear his uniform while standing vigil at the late Queen’s coffin alongside William and Her Majesty’s six other grandchildren.
He is also entitled to wear his medals. Harry has been awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, which was given to all those in active service on February 6, 2002, who had completed five years in the forces.
Additionally, he received an Afghanistan Operational Service Medal in recognition of his service at the frontline in Helmand Province.
In 2012, he was bestowed with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal to commemorate his grandmother’s 60th year on the throne. It was awarded to all members of the Armed Forces, emergency services, prison services and members of the Royal Household.

In 2022, Prince Harry was honoured with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal and also holds the KCVO Star, a recognition of his distinguished personal service to the monarch. However, despite receiving the King’s Coronation medal following his father’s ascension to the throne last May, he has notably chosen not to wear it in recent public appearances.
