Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader, according to reports from Iranian state media, marking a historic and controversial transition in the leadership of the Islamic Republic.

The decision was made by the powerful Assembly of Experts, the clerical body responsible for selecting Iran’s supreme leader.

In a statement reported by multiple outlets, the assembly said Mojtaba Khamenei had been chosen through a decisive vote during an extraordinary session convened to determine the country’s next leader.

Mojtaba, 56, is the second son of the late Ali Khamenei, who had ruled Iran since 1989 and served as the most powerful figure in the country.

His appointment comes after his father’s reported death during strikes linked to the escalating conflict involving the United States and Israel.

With the appointment, Mojtaba Khamenei becomes only the third person to hold the position of Supreme Leader since the Iranian Revolution established the Islamic Republic.

Although he has largely remained out of the public spotlight and has never held a formal government office, Mojtaba Khamenei has long been viewed as a powerful figure behind the scenes within Iran’s political and religious establishment.

Analysts note his close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a key military and political force within the country.

His appointment has sparked debate because Iran’s revolutionary ideology historically rejected hereditary leadership resembling monarchy.

However, supporters within influential power centers reportedly backed his rise due to his longstanding connections with the country’s security and religious institutions.

The leadership transition comes at a particularly tense moment for Iran, as the country faces intensifying regional conflict and mounting international pressure.

Observers say the new Supreme Leader will inherit one of the most volatile geopolitical situations Iran has faced in decades.

For now, Iranian authorities are calling for national unity behind the new leader as the country navigates the ongoing crisis and the uncertain future of the region.
