Siatkarki reprezentacji Polski dopiero po raz czwarty wystąpiły na turnieju olimpijskim. Biało-Czerwone w latach 1964 i 1968 wracały z brązowymi medalami. Później musiały czekać aż do 2008 roku, aby pojawić się na parkiecie.
W Paryżu zdołały wyjść z grupy z drugiego miejsca – dzięki wygranym z Japonią (3:1) oraz Kenią (3:0).
