Princess Charlotte Reportedly Set to Inherit Princess Diana’s Spencer Tiara — Meghan Markle Allegedly Expresses Frustration Over Royal Traditions
Princess Charlotte, the 8-year-old daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales, is reportedly the frontrunner to inherit the iconic Spencer Tiara, a treasured family heirloom famously worn by Princess Diana on her wedding day in 1981. The tiara, valued at an estimated $535,000, is owned by the Spencer family and has long been regarded as one of the most sentimental pieces within Diana’s legacy.
According to RadarOnline.com, the decision has sparked private frustration from Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, who is said to be disappointed that her daughter, Princess Lilibet, may not have the same access to this symbolic heirloom. Sources close to the Sussexes allege that Meghan views the matter as reflective of a broader pattern of royal traditions favoring Prince William’s children over her own.
“You think this is just about a tiara? Think again — it’s about what we deserve,” Meghan allegedly remarked in private, expressing concerns about perceived disparities in treatment between the two family branches.
Jewelry expert Maxwell Stone of Steven Stone Jewellers commented on the matter, noting that while both Charlotte and Lilibet could theoretically wear the tiara in the future, several key factors influence the likelihood.
“Princess Charlotte, as a visible and active member of the royal family, embodies her grandmother’s legacy in a very public way. That makes the Spencer Tiara a fitting and symbolic choice for future formal events, particularly a wedding,” Stone explained.
By contrast, Princess Lilibet, 5, who resides primarily in the United States with her parents, has a more distanced relationship with the formal workings of the monarchy. “Raised outside traditional royal circles, her path is less entwined with royal customs, which may make access to the tiara less straightforward,” Stone added.
The Spencer Tiara, which dates back to the 18th century and was reassembled in 1919 for Diana’s grandmother, Countess Cynthia Spencer, is currently under the care of Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother and the 9th Earl Spencer. Since Princess Diana’s passing in 1997, the tiara has only been seen publicly on rare occasions, most notably at the wedding of Diana’s niece, Celia McCorquodale, in 2018.
Neither the Princess of Wales nor Meghan Markle has publicly worn the tiara, though both have paid tribute to Diana through other symbolic fashion choices over the years.
While no official announcement has been made regarding the tiara’s future, royal insiders suggest that Princess Charlotte’s central role within the royal family makes her the natural heir to this particular piece of Diana’s legacy. This possibility has reportedly intensified existing tensions between the Sussexes and the Waleses.
One source noted: “As the custodian of the Spencer family heirlooms, Charles Spencer has final say over the tiara’s future. Given Charlotte’s prominent role and direct ties to the monarchy, many believe she is the most appropriate choice.”
Though the situation may reignite public debate about the evolving dynamics within the royal family, the final decision ultimately rests with the Spencer family, whose ties to the tiara are independent of the royal institution.
