Remembering Princess Diana: Her Funeral on This Day in 1997

On this day, September 6, in 1997, the world bid farewell to Diana, Princess of Wales, in a solemn and historic funeral ceremony held in London.

The service commenced at 9:08 AM, marked by the tolling of the tenor bell at Westminster Abbey, signaling the departure of the funeral cortège from Kensington Palace.

Princess Diana’s coffin was carried on a gun carriage, escorted by members of the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery. The cortège proceeded through Hyde Park, accompanied by mounted police, en route to St James’s Palace, where her body had been kept for five days prior to the funeral.

As the procession began, the Union Flag atop Kensington Palace was lowered to half-mast in a poignant tribute.

The funeral ceremony was held at Westminster Abbey and concluded at the Spencer family estate in Althorp, Northamptonshire, where Princess Diana was laid to rest.
