Former Royal Butler Paul Burrell Makes Bold Claims: Meghan Markle Sought a ‘Starring Role’ in the Monarchy — Predicts Marriage to Prince Harry Is Likely to Fail
Former royal butler Paul Burrell has made striking claims regarding Meghan Markle’s ambitions within the British Royal Family, suggesting she sought a central, high-profile position—and warning that her marriage to Prince Harry may ultimately not endure.
In a candid interview with the Daily Mail Royals channel and an exclusive feature for the Palace Confidential newsletter, Burrell, who served Queen Elizabeth II and was later Princess Diana’s trusted butler, shared his insider perspective on royal dynamics.
Burrell began his royal service as a footman to Queen Elizabeth II in 1976 and went on to serve as butler to the then Prince and Princess of Wales in 1987. From 1992 until Princess Diana’s tragic death in 1997, he worked exclusively for her—gaining rare insight into the inner workings of the Royal Family.
“I don’t believe Meghan ever intended to play a supporting role,” Burrell said. “She wanted to be the star.”
According to Burrell, the cultural differences between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle created fundamental challenges in their relationship. “I believe the two cultures that came together in their marriage are divided by a fault line. One day, I fear, that will split.”
In his new memoir, The Royal Insider: My Life with the Queen, the King, and Princess Diana, Burrell elaborates:
“She aspired to be the leading figure, yet would always be second to the future Queen, Catherine. Meghan sought the visibility and influence of celebrity, but resisted the conventions and expectations of the House of Windsor. As an American, she found it difficult to navigate the institution’s deeply ingrained traditions and protocols.”
Burrell’s assessment of the couple’s future is sobering: “I believe the breakdown of Harry and Meghan’s marriage is inevitable.”
Speaking further in his interview with the Daily Mail, Burrell painted a picture of growing dissatisfaction:
“Harry came from an active, structured royal environment. Even during his downtime, he had polo, engagements, and a clear sense of purpose. Now, in Montecito, he may find himself wondering, ‘What’s next? What is my role?’”
Burrell also expressed concerns about Prince Harry’s adjustment to life outside the Royal Family.
“This type of uncertainty will, I believe, wear on him,” he said. “As Meghan continues to rise in the world of entertainment, particularly with Netflix, I suspect it will not be fulfilling for either of them in the long run.”
He added that Markle may seek even greater influence.
“She already has millions—perhaps her next step is a billionaire. Why not?”
In a particularly provocative remark likely to stir discussion, Burrell even speculated on Meghan’s potential political aspirations:
“Why not become governor of California?” he asked.
