Retired Marine General and former Secretary of Defense James Mattis publicly condemned Donald Trump in a Washington Post op-ed, writing: “Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people – does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us.”
Mattis, one of the most decorated military figures of his generation, served as Trump’s Defense Secretary before resigning in protest over Trump’s decision to abruptly withdraw US troops from Syria.
The remarks came amid widespread protests across the country following the death of George Floyd.
Trump responded by publicly mocking Mattis, calling him “the world’s most overrated general.”
