Reports analyzing Defense Department spending say the Pentagon burned through $93 billion in September 2025, the most spent at the end of a fiscal year since 2008. Read more
According to watchdog group Open the Books, millions went toward food and equipment purchases including:
• $6.9 million on lobster tails
• $2 million on Alaskan king crab
• $15.1 million on ribeye steaks
• $140,000 on donuts
• $124,000 on ice cream machines
The Pentagon also reportedly spent $225 million on furniture, including items like $12,000 fruit basket stands, plus billions on technology such as cable TV services, Apple devices, and Samsung electronics.
The spending spree reportedly happened because agencies often rush to spend remaining funds before the fiscal year ends under the government’s “use-it-or-lose-it” budgeting system.
