Hot update Democrats Intensify Criticism of Trump After Venezuela Strikes, Some Call for Impeachment

on

In the wake of a dramatic U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro prominent Democratic lawmakers and commentators are vocally condemning former President Donald Trump accusing him of acting beyond his constitutional authority and in violation of international law.

The operation, conducted in early January 2026, involved U.S. strikes inside Venezuelan territory and the extraction of Maduro and his wife to U.S. custody to face federal charges.

The Trump administration described the mission as a counter-narcotics and law-enforcement effort and defended it as necessary given Maduro’s alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

However, many Democrats, legal experts and international observers say the strikes lacked both congressional authorization and a valid legal basis under international law.

Accusations of Unlawful War and Constitutional Violations

Several Democratic lawmakers have accused Trump of launching an illegal war and violating the U.S.

Constitution** by authorizing military strikes without congressional approval, a power reserved to Congress under the U.S. Constitution.

Critics argue that even if Maduro is a controversial figure, the president does not have the unilateral authority to initiate sustained military operations in another sovereign nation.

This act of aggression is unconstitutional, un-American, and a direct threat to our democracy,” Rep.

Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.)said in a statement, condemning the operation and Trump’s decision to bypass Congress.

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), a military veteran, described the strikes as an “illegal, unnecessary war,” drawing parallels to past wars launched without sufficient public justification.

Similarly, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) called the military campaign “insane” and criticized Trump’s broader strategic rationale.

Calls for Impeachment and Legal Accountability.

While not all Democratic leaders have explicitly called for impeachment a growing segment of progressive lawmakers and commentators are publicly discussing impeachment as a possible response to what they characterize as “illegal” executive actions.

Media personality and longtime Trump critic Keith Olbermann publicly called for impeachment, saying Trump’s actions constituted an “insane and illegal personal war” that endangered both U.S. law and global stability.

Some members of the Democratic caucus, including Rep. **Delia Ramirez have stated that Trump *must be impeached for overstepping constitutional authority and failing to adhere to requirements for congressional oversight of war powers.

However, several top Democratic leaders — including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer — have stopped short of outright impeachment calls.

They have instead emphasized constitutional responsibility and the need to restore the separation of powers, demanding full briefings and potential legislative restrictions on future military action.

Internal Divisions and Broader Political Context.

The Democratic response is far from monolithic.

While progressives and grassroots activists push for stronger actions — including possible impeachment articles and tighter War Powers Act constraints — many senior Democrats are focused on legal oversight rather than immediate removal proceedings.

Critics inside the party point to the absence of a clear national security threat justifying the U.S. military action and express concern that the operation could destabilize the region, damage global norms, and embolden authoritarian rivals.

Some Democrats have also voiced concern about the broader implications for U.S. foreign policy — warning that continuing military engagements without clear legal authority could diminish America’s global standing and erode public trust.

International Reaction and Legal Objections

The controversy is not limited to U.S. politics. European leaders — including Spain’s prime minister — have condemned the U.S. intervention as a violation of international law, further fueling Democratic critiques that Trump’s actions were unlawful on both domestic and global stages.

Legal scholars and UN human rights officials have suggested the strikes could amount to war crimes under international legal norms requiring either Security Council authorization or a legitimate self-defense justification — neither of which has been clearly established.

What Comes Nex

As the U.S. Congress returns from recess, Democrats are expected to pursue greater oversight into the legal basis and execution of the Venezuela operation, potentially drafting legislation to reinforce congressional control over military engagements.

Impeachment efforts — while gaining traction among progressives — may face significant hurdles in a Republican-controlled House, meaning that investigations, public hearings, and legislative checks on presidential war powers are likely to be the next major arenas of conflict over this issue.
