In a shocking and violent development in Minneapolis, a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) officer had part of his finger bitten off by a rioter amid intense clashes between protesters and federal agents on Saturday, U.S. authorities say.

According to Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, the gruesome injury occurred as tensions boiled over following a federal enforcement action earlier in the day.

In a social media post, McLaughlin shared that rioters attacked law enforcement officers and that one assailant bit off the HSI officer’s finger, an injury she said will result in the permanent loss of the digit.

The confrontation was part of larger unrest triggered by the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by U.S.

Border Patrol agents earlier that morning during an operation in the city.

Pretti’s death — occurring as officers sought to apprehend an undocumented immigrant — sparked widespread protests and clashes with law enforcement.

McLaughlin’s post included graphic images of the officer’s injured hand and the severed portion of the finger, as well as photos of two individuals the agency identified as alleged assailants.

It was not immediately clear which individual was responsible for the biting incident.

In addition to the HSI officer’s severe injury, McLaughlin confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation that a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent also suffered a bite wound to a finger, though not as extensively.

The violent episodes in Minneapolis reflect escalating tensions around federal immigration enforcement efforts in the city.

Demonstrations have drawn hundreds of participants and have at times turned destructive, leading to projectiles thrown at officers, arrests, and deployment of additional law enforcement resources.

Authorities are continuing investigations into both the shooting that ignited the unrest and the assault on federal officers.

Federal prosecutors have been directed to pursue charges related to the biting incident, emphasizing the severity of the attack on the HSI officer.
